The new school age cut-off

When the school cut-off changed, it changed twice, and the two official versions do not fully agree. One has since been taken offline. If you are trying to work out whether your child is affected, and which exception applies, the confusion is not yours alone.

This is a plain-language guide, made by parents, to what the documents actually say: quoted, sourced, and honest about where they leave a question open.

For the British curriculum, the long-standing cut-off was 31 August. The new guidance moves it to 31 December, starting 2026-27. Doubts are now being cast on the exceptions to that rule.

Will KHDA re-confirm that the UK-curriculum FS1 readiness assessment applies annually beyond 2026-27?

Not yet. This is the one part still unresolved.

1. Until 2025-26

   For the British curriculum, school age followed the usual UK-curriculum 31 August cut-off, so children born from September to December were the youngest in their year.

2. December 2025

   The Ministry of Education set the cut-off at 31 December for children not already enrolled, which pushes September-to-December babies up by a whole year group.

3. Early 2026

   After families raised concerns about children skipping a foundational year, the rules were softened, with a readiness-based flexibility for the 2026-27 year.

4. June 2026

   The 31 December cut-off is here to stay. For 2026-27 there is some give; one question about later years is still open.
